A far-infrared spectroscopic survey of intermediate redshift (ultra) luminous infrared galaxies

چکیده
We present Herschel far-IR photometry and spectroscopy as well as ground-based CO observations of an intermediate redshift (0.21 z 0.88) sample of Herschel-selected (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies (LIR > 1011.5 L⊙). With these measurements, we trace the dust continuum, far-IR atomic line emission, in particular [C ii] 157.7μm, as well as the molecular gas of z ∼ 0.3 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs) and perform a detailed investigation of the interstellar medium of the population. We find that the majority of Herschel-selected intermediate redshift (U)LIRGs have LC ii/LFIR ratios that are a factor of about 10 higher than that of local ULIRGs and comparable to that of local normal and high-z star-forming galaxies. Using our sample to bridge local and high-z [C ii] observations, we find that the majority of galaxies at all redshifts and all luminosities follow an LC ii−LFIR relation with a slope of unity, from which local ULIRGs and high-z active-galactic-nucleus-dominated sources are clear outliers. We also confirm that the strong anti-correlation between the LC ii/LFIR ratio and the far-IR color L60/L100 observed in the local universe holds over a broad range of redshifts and luminosities, in the sense that warmer sources exhibit lower LC ii/LFIR at any epoch. Intermediate redshift ULIRGs are also characterized by large molecular gas reservoirs and by lower star formation efficiencies compared to that of local ULIRGs. The high LC ii/LFIR ratios, the moderate star formation efficiencies (LIR/L′CO or LIR/MH2 ), and the relatively low dust temperatures of our sample (which are also common characteristics of high-z star-forming galaxies with ULIRG-like luminosities) indicate that the evolution of the physical properties of (U)LIRGs between the present day and z > 1 is already significant by z ∼ 0.3.

Herschel observations of far-infrared cooling lines in intermediate redshift (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies
We report the first results from a spectroscopic survey of the [C ii] 158 μm line from a sample of intermediate redshift (0.2 < z < 0.8) (ultra)-luminous infrared galaxies, (U)LIRGs (LIR > 10 11.5 L⊙), using the Spectral and Photometric Imaging REceiver–Fourier Transform Spectrometer on board the Herschel Space Observatory. This is the first survey of [C ii] emission, an important tracer of sta...
متن کاملOPTICALLY FAINT COUNTERPARTS TO THE ISO-FIRBACK 170μm POPULATION: THE DISCOVERY OF COLD, LUMINOUS GALAXIES AT HIGH REDSHIFT
We present Keck spectroscopy and UKIRT near-IR imaging observations of two 170μm-selected sources from the ISO-FIRBACK survey which have faint counterparts in the optical, and r − K ∼ 5. Both sources were expected to lie at z > 1 based on their far-infrared, submillimeter and radio fluxes, assuming a similar spectral energy distribution to the local ultra-luminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) Arp 22...
متن کاملThe Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies
We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...
متن کاملProbing the Interstellar Medium of Z ∼ 1 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies through Interferometric Observations of Co and Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy
We explore the relationship between gas, dust and star formation in a sample of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high redshift compared to a similar sample of local galaxies. We present new CO observations and/or Spitzer mid-IR spectroscopy for 6 70μm-selected galaxies at z ∼ 1 in order to quantify the properties of the molecular gas reservoir, the contribution of an active galac...
متن کاملRestframe Optical Spectroscopic Classifications for Submillimeter Galaxies
We report the results of a systematic near-infrared spectroscopic survey using the Subaru, VLT and Keck Telescopes of a sample of high redshift Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) mainly composed of submillimeter-selected galaxies. Our observations span the restframe optical range containing nebular emission lines such as Hβ, [Oiii]λλ4959, 5007, and [Oii]λ3727, which are essential for mak...
